The third act in a trilogy from curators Dominique Moulon, Alain Thibault and Cathernine Bédard, following the exhibitions Human Learning: What Machines Teach Us and Decision Making: The Decisive Instant. In Endless Variations, they explore the notion of series across history.
Successive industrial revolutions hastened the pace of change in the world, transforming society and aesthetics. In the 19th century, artists began painting series to better capture every aspect of their subjects. In today’s era, where algorithms and artificial intelligence abound, more artists are collaborating with programs that generate their works in multiple versions and endless variations.
These creation interfaces, developed from interactive or generative processes, have been available to the public for several years now – to tweak online profiles and our multiple identities, for instance. This exhibition should be approached as a workshop in which the works are still being created.
Curators: Dominique Moulon (art critic and independent curator), Alain Thibault (co-curator of the exhibition and director of the International Digital Art Biennal in Montreal, with which Biennale Némo is twinned), Catherine Bédard (curator and deputy director of the Canadian Cultural Centre, Embassy of Canada in Paris).
